Schools will be remote in all democratic states. They passed the window to contain this and if we open schools there will be carnage. Children in red states will die as will their parents/grand parents and the republicans will cover it up as much as they can. I do legitimately think Cuomo has done such a good job containing that we could potentially do a hybrid model.
Children are minimally affected by this, please look up the numbers and you will see. Also EU countries are putting kids back in school, especially young ones full-time, because it’s bonkers not to.
The EU has the virus under control AND adequately funds their schools. We do not.
Are you dense? Children come home and spread it to people who are not minimally affected. Do you have kids? they are disease vectors.
School closures are bullshit, they are hurting working moms and disadvantaged kids. Teachers need to buck up and go back. If they don’t like working with the public they should get other jobs.
If you get covid I hope you don't take up a hospital bed.
You’ll be pleased to know that I already got it and it was a wimpy little cold. Not something to be afraid of for most people.
Fne, but you can't know if that will be your experience until it happens. It's Russian roulette, and you don't really get to tell teachers and other staff what risks they have to be comfortable with. Are you going to support their families if they die from covid because a kid infected them?
It's not just kids and teachers. It's also the bus drivers, administrative staff, janitorial staff, and anyone else who comes into the buildings. Then it's all of the families of these workers along with the kids' families. Then there are the additional expenses for masks, hand sanitizer, etc., which aren't in the current budgets. What, exactly, do you want them to do? Risk death so you can go into the office?
OP- No! I think they need to stay closed. Obviously I *want* to live in an alternate universe where it was safe for them to open but it’s not and I see no point in expending all this energy for a hybrid model where each kid spends 1.5 days in school and the remote instruction suffers because teachers then understandably prioritize the in-person time. Just surprised it wasn’t discussed much here since it seems highly unlikely that they’ll open and back on UB everybody seemed convinced that schools just *had* to reopen.
+1 it's SINFUL that our federal government has not enacted emergency measures to ensure that masks, hand sanitizers, running water, etc are available at every public school. Also - given the number of kids in school classrooms particularly in urban areas, the federal government should have provided additional funds to lease space from vacant buildings / movie theaters etc. If this were in place, I'd be fully supportive. I'd be curious if Trump's school aged son is going to school in person next year...
Everything the federal government has done in response to the virus is disgraceful. We are witnessing a collapse of the government.
I am sure that Baron will have only the best private tutors at his disposal.
Barron and every other kid whose parents have $. And private schools may be open so what is your point? Its the poor and middle class show get screwed.
I did post about this the other day, and no one responded. I think all of the kids in the country would be returning to school in-person if our government hadn't botched the response so resoundingly. All of the problems could be addressed with adequate funding and intelligent, informed policies. But there isn't the political will.
Totally this. This isn't some insurmountable problem, plenty of other countries have it mostly under control with flareups here and there. We are the richest country in the world, there is no reason we couldn't contain this.
Look up what's happening with Israel's numbers once they opened school. It's not good...
But those were mostly older kids, no? The young kids are not really vectors (That's the theory anyway).
Our CA school is opening. The privates are all saying they will open.
This is the problem. Poor kids will be likely PERMANENTLY affected by these closures. Rich kids will continue on as normal. This is not okay!
Im in CA. Private schools can’t open either. Parents thought they would and are now paying 20K for zoom classes.
They won’t open unless Medicare for all, police are defunded, no more charters etc. Poor kids
STFU. That's one union in one district and they're not going to get their way. You are stirring the pot.
I know this to be true. However in practice, as an administrator at a very diverse NYCDOE school, I find it interesting that my Black and Latino working-class parents are also most cautious and concerned about schools reopening (many will not send their dcs), whereas the white yuppie parents are pushing the reopening agenda cloaked on the behalf of those other students. Truthfully it is they- those who are fortunate enough to be able to hold jobs and work from home- who feel (understandably) incapacitated by the hardship of WFH while child-rearing.
You guys can keep your public schools closed if you want, but that means we now need a voucher system and more charter schools so that parents can send their kids somewhere if they so choose.
Also, the Black and Latino working NY'ers have witnessed enormous suffering in their communities, probably deaths in their own families. As a white yuppie parent, I have experienced zero losses so far.
Yes yuppie parent, zero losses, very upset about my child's private school going remote.
