We just had our upper school Zoom call with the administration to discuss protocols and procedures for going back to school in person. It sounds like they are really discouraging outside sports where social distancing and masks are not required. If kids do club sports where they play other teams, they should then remain in remote learning. Are your schools asking kids to make this sacrifice? School will be hybrid. Is it ok if kids don't do the sport during the week that they have in person school or would they have to give up the sport completely? I can understand if there is school every day, but what if there is only school one week per month? I guess school is more important, so give up the sport?
where is your school? ours, in nyc, hasnt been that specific but this makes sense
Yes Manhattan. It only got this specific 2 weeks before kids start going back.
@anonymous ruh roh. our upper school starts in 2 weeks too and now I'm thinking I missed this directive! I do find it incredulous that they are opening so late and not offering sports and expect kids not to do it outside of school either. If they'd opened earlier and or more it would be an easier trade off. But having kids sit online all day with no physical activity is horrendous.
Yikes. That is a tough call. How is DC going with remote learning so far?
Depending on how he/she is coping, I would almost be tempted to keep the sport and stay remote, if the school if offering a fully remote option. Weekly social interaction through the sport may be more beneficial vs one week a month at school.
FWIW, if the hybrid model was one or two days a week in school, I would feel differently and would absolutely say prioritize school.
DC is ok with remote, but is craving to see classmates in person, so I don't think I want to go fully remote even though the school is offering that option. I agree that having sports with real live kids twice a week has been a life saver. Hence the dilemma. I wonder if there is a way not to give up either fully. Kids have to get tested before going back. Perhaps for the week that kids are in school, they can not do the sport and then go back to the sport when kids go back to remote for 3 weeks. It's so hard. I just want to do the right thing...
@anonymous You'd have to ask the school, but given that the virus can take a few days to show up on tests, I'd assume you'd also have to not do sports the week before a school week. Two weeks if they're being really cautious. Is it possible to miss that much sport and stay on the team?
@a nonymous You're right, it would probably have to be no sports the week before too. sigh...
I think the school is being unreasonable. You not likely to get Covid being outside playing a game. Especially if you are wearing a masks. Kids have suffered so much during this, why take away a low-risk activity? Maybe you can discuss it with them?
@Anonymous OP says they are asking to go remote if the sport doesn’t allow for SD or mask wearing. I think it’s a perfectly reasonable request. The schools made so much effort to reopen, built all these protocols, etc, kids who want to be part of a team which doesn’t social distance or wear masks should go remote. Swim teams and meets are back on where I am, and no way can they social distance, even if they want to.
Travel sports can also involve a lot of circumstances that can promote disease spread- hotels, locker rooms, carpooling, restaurants. I can't tell if what you're describing is a travel team but I can see schools being especially cautious about that.
