Seeing that this entire school year is looking to be a joke and how much less the children will be receiving and learning- when will the point come that schools have no choice to let kids repeat the school year (ie stay behind)? also, please note this question only applies to DOE, as opposed to private schools where there is of course much more flexibility in terms of red shirting, etc

I realize this isn’t for everyone but I would love to scrap this year. I have a first grader and this would be a no brainer for me.
Please don't generalize that everyone's remote experience is going to be a joke. My kids did fine last year and both schools have plans in place that will improve the process for this year. My kids are older so that makes a BIG difference. I think it should definitely be a family's choice to repeat a grade, but I would be vehemently opposed to that being a sweeping mandate.
no- not meant to make it a mandate- just to make it an option!!! for the parents who feel it is necessary. not all children, especially the younger ones cannot do well nor learn as much with remote learning
I agree in theory that people should have a choice, but what will the classes look like next year? Half the class will be older and with unsuccessful remote learning. The other half younger who did fine with remote learning. It will be an odd group.
the DOE cut offs - december 31st- are so unfair anyways- you have kids who are almost one year difference in age!
Every class is going to have kids that are one year difference in age no matter the cut off. DOE actually reduces their age differences by strictly enforcing theirs and not allowing redshirting.
@anonymous yes, but as the other R pointed out, you always have up to an age difference. But now you can have up to a two year difference. Moreover, my point is not about age difference but about skill disparity.
DOE will absolutely not allow this. They don't let kids repeat even when teachers recommend it sometimes. It's all about money. I would love my 6th grader to repeat 6th next year.
I would love to hold my 5th grader back, he is so behind makes me want to cry
well at some point someone had to accept accountability for how bad the DOE has done with this since March!! are kids supposed to be a year and a half behind?? unless they majorly plan to adjust the curriculum , flexibility will have to be implemented and allowed
I have a rising 1st dec boy who is 5. If things suck I’m sitting this year out.
If you have a younger child, this is an easy decision. But they'll never allow it.
@Anonymous the question doesnt apply to private schools where essentially parents can do what they want in terms of placement
But with private, aren't you paying $$$ for school NOT to suck?
@Ananonymous again..the question was geared only for public schools, for which presumably private is simply not an option for families
