I have a rising 5th grader in D3. I'm not sure what we'll do if middle school admission is going to be a lottery. I wish we at least knew what the plan is.
So does anyone know if this is truly a good thing or bad thing? I know everyone on here thinks getting rid of selective schools is a horrible thing, but I have a rising 5th grader in D2 and am not particularly worried, thinking that he'll end up wherever is best for him. However, all the hysterics have me second guessing my nonchalance.
I sort of feel like you but slightly less nonchalant about my rising 5th grader. I believe it will all be a lottery. We’re applying to a couple of privates as a backup.
@Anonymous As a D2 parent, I think it's a fallacy that all D2 middle schools are good. However, there are probably more good ones than in other districts. I think this year is going to suck for parents looking at middle schools and high schools. My youngest is in 8th grade so I'm not looking forward to it. Good luck with your process.
Honestly, some of the in person tours aren't great either. When my kids toured D2 middle schools a few years ago, there were a few that kept you in the auditorium or cafeteria and had speakers in that room but no tour of the school.
No insight really, but my guess is that they will level the playing field and get rid of some of the rubrics selective schools like Salk, East Side Middle, etc. use and make all schools a lottery. Same with the CW schools, I think their days are numbered. Not this year but soon.
DOE has been very clear in their goals to get rid of G&T and screens, with the pandemic was the opportunity to do so. There are no grades or state test scores for 4th and 7th. No one knows what the DOE will do for the fall. Back in spring lots of concern and push back by parents on the grading policy and its TBD impact on admission. Even if a temporary lottery / zone / whatever for this fall ... as all things government temporary becomes permanent.

Seems like it will start with virtual tours, which will not be super useful.
