I have been out of the city since March and only back a couple of times. Spending week here now and it really is much better than I thought it would be. Am I being stupidly optimistic that things may be okay and school can stay open?
As someone who left in March, it was a lot worse then. You would hear sirens all the time, no grocery deliveries were available, we felt worried about the building elevator, and didn't feel comfortable with the park or takeout food to say nothing about outdoor dining. It is a very different mood and feeling now.
@Anon Even the smallest bit of common sense would lead you to the conclusion that it wasn't likely to be the same as March. Come on. I'm not trying to be mean but I have no patience with bubbleheads who having been holed up in their country homes.
Me and my teenage son have noticed a ton more homeless since when we left in June. It's very very sad but I have not seen any violent or scary behavior, just people in terrible squalid situations that are heartbreaking.
I had dinner on the UWS last night. Outdoors. A homeless guy came by selling roses. A middle-aged white guy yelled at him to get lost in the rudest way you could imagine. So he moved on. The patron complained to the restaurant staff that the homeless guy approached him without a mask. When they left, the middle-aged guy stood directly over our table and yelled in a very spitty way, to the staff inside the restaurant, saying thanks and goodbye and whatever. You think he or anyone else in his family put on a mask? Of course not.
Same. I love the quiet and I sure don't miss the country home crowd. I grew up here and it reminds me of the NYC of the '80's - grittier and a bit more dangerous than it's been for the past couple of decades, but also more resourceful and interesting.
I've just come back (I left for the summer, but was here through June), and I get what you mean. I knew things were going to be better, but even when I got to a store now I get little flashbacks to how intense things were in the spring. That being said, it's been great being back. Parks are full, we're meeting up with friends outdoors and spaced out, and there's a lot of life.

Hello NYC Realtor crew - y'all seem just to be in your UES bubbles; a woman was almost raped on the subway platform at 63 and Lex this past weekend. What the hell? Are you making yourselves feel better by all rah rah-ing one another? Get a life.
lol, what did you think it would be like? People dropping dead in the streets?

No need to be like that.

@anonymous that's terrible.
Well duh. A third of people in the city have lost their jobs. How would they pay rent? And it's not going to get better anytime soon.
I'm actually loving NYC right now. But I never left and tbh, it's been fine for most of the past 6 months, at least for us.

@Anonymous Oh god, are you writing this from your home in Sagaponak? Please. Anecdote is not evidence
A judge was punched in the face when she got off the SI ferry into Manhattan today. Everything’s just great.
Yet here in Sagaponack we read the New York City papers - from our terraces overlooking the Atlantic....
oh yes the New York Post is so accurate
