So now that the vaccine is imminent - what is the risk that teachers and other essential workers refuse to take them, resulting in a continuation of remote school and social distancing?
Great! Its not mandatory but available if one chooses to take it - therefore no excuse for not teaching in person in the school. I can assume that the exemptions for remote teaching will be taken away (except for very specific cases) once the vaccine is out.
The risk is incredibly low that classroom teachers will refuse to take it, at least assuming you are in and urban district above the Mason Dickson line.
Ack - Dixon, and that was obvi political, but I do mean in areas where there is general belief that COVID is real and not a hoax, I think most people will get on board.
Apparently half the members of an FDNY group that was surveyed said they will not take the vaccine - per a post article this weekend. Teachers may not be different
I think they will take the vaccine. After all the fussing about putting their lives in danger, they're going to have difficulty justifying refusing a life-saving measure.
firefighters are mostly young and in good shape healthwise -- not all teachers are - and a lot of them already had it and recovered so think they are immune , which I think is less true for teachers.
Firefighters skew conservative, teachers skew liberal. Also, teachers are already used to having mandatory vaccination every year- it's not a profession that tolerates antivaxxers
How about they don't force them to take the vaccine, but they have to go back to work inperson? Then it's their choice -- they're not going to get special protective measures if there's a vaccine available that they won't take.
Aside from the fact that younger people do die and experience prolonged side effects, at the very least you would want to ensure you aren’t a vector in its spread. We need herd immunity to get back to any semblance of normal.
As with any immunization, its effectiveness in any given person is improved with the more people that receive it.
If they are going to require it for kids (which I assume they will, like the myriad of other vaccines), then they damn well better require for teachers. I don't want to hear "its not safe to go back to in person schools" for next school year.
I don’t care if they take it or not. It’s now available and these teachers need to get their asses back to work like the rest of the population or cut their pay by 50%. Teaching is NOT a WFH position.
They get fired and save the city a lot of money.
What will they get fired for? Seems clear the vaccine won't be mandatory.
Difference between you can go to jail and your employer can mandate. Employers and schools will have to mandate. Our school already mandates flu
@Anonymous well NYC does not. And since other essential workers won't be required to get the vaccine, I don't understand how they could make teachers.

@Anonymous I don't know. I see some of the posts by teachers and parents in parents groups ... serious Alex Jones type of stuff.
Yes - it’s not mandatory.

THIS. Opt out if you want, but then I don't want to hear about how you need an exemption to work remotely. Teaching is NOT A REMOTE JOB. End of story.
If you're younger than 60, why would you take it?
Is this a serious question?

Long Covid is a thing, even for the young. Who wants lifelong side effects?
@Anonymous Exactly. I mean, where is your line??
Schools will very likely make the vaccine mandatory for staff and teachers. Don’t like it, go find a new job.

They haven't even tested on small kids yet. Nobody under 18/16 so far.

THIS. If you don't like going into a workplace, try telemarketing.
