The letter was so grating that if I were an admin at Dalton I would have also dismissed it.

And - news alert - a lot of children take cues about how "isolated, ashamed, disturbed, and alarmed" they are (paraphrasing) not being at school - from their parents...so this is a self-perpetuating problem. The physicians are also on the Urban Haute Bourgeoisie side, maybe would've had better luck if they had partnered with some working-class parents - if they could find them - to send the letter. They might have proofread it for the physicians as well. Those STEM majors!
Are you seriously taking the position that putting a first grader in front of zoom for six hours a day, alone without socialization, does not result in them feeling isolated and disturbed? That it’s the fault of the parents? What is wrong with you?
@Anonymous Too late for Dalton parents...I'm sure that the Horace Mann closing will be used to justify keeping Dalton closed for the semester. My kids haven't felt isolated and disturbed once since the pandemic started because they are in a loving and caring environment fwiw. Sorry poster above is missing her SoulCycle classes!
Forgive me. But my children are not okay. One has anxiety and zoom exacerbates that. And yes I think six hours of screentime a day is unhealthy and downright cruel. As far as soulcycle goes, I’ve had to turn down work that was important to my family bc I’m homeschooling in some handmaid’s Tale dreamed up by Dalton board members.
I support the Dalton families who wrote this letter. Dalton and Allen Stevenson appear to be the only city schools that are fully remote with no commitment to open. When that decision was made, there were unknowns, and so there was a lot of rhetoric about how live school will be too difficult in these circumstances, it will be unsafe, and the schools will shut down ASAP. Well guess what, all of that has now been proven WRONG. There are kids who have been in school for six weeks now, and they are doing great. There is no incidence of kids getting sick from being in school. It's very clear that live school is a huge advantage over zoom school, and even if schools have to go remote in the future, the kids will have had the opportunity to make connections with their peers and teachers in person. It's now clear that whatever pretend justification Dalton had in the beginning did not pan out, and that Dalton has completely screwed over its community, so they should be making a plan to reopen in the future.

Rich people problems
Dalton's position is indefensible, as far as I'm concerned. Good for Spence for changing course.
