My friend from DC moved in with her parents in CT so her two kids could attend in person school. She works remotely, and her husband stayed behind in DC.
She’s hoping by next year DC schools will open for in person learning. It sounds like the teachers keep moving the goal posts. First they wanted the teachers to be vaccinated. Now they want kids vaccinated? Or so I heard.
this is definitely just temporary though. They both have government jobs and plan to stay in DC.
Yes. But, moved for reasons in addition to school. Not sure when or if we will go back to NYC. DC is about to enter middle school and I don't want to deal with current school situation. Miss NYC terribly.
I'm not convinced. Are they wearing masks and socially distanced? I mean, are they even teaching real science and history? Or are cave men walking around with dinosaurs and The War of Northern Agression still raging?
For those that moved to states that kept schools open, how comfortable are you with how the school is handling it? I ask because we just heard from friends in TX who say that 7 of 20 in their DC’s Houston area class are out with COVID and the school‘s response is a blasé your choice whether to keep sending DC v any sort of statement/action from school on how it is managing or responding to limit community spread.
My friend lives in Dallas and its a free for all. COVID spreads in schools and they do not shut the school down. Restaurants are open, people having parties, living their life as if nothing happened. My friend works in a COVID ward at a hospital so she is locked down totally but everyone around her could care less about the people dying.
We did (not to FL). We have been happy but DC miss "their" school. The plan is to be back in the fall when (hopefully) the school schedule will be more regular and the infection rates better than this past school year.
We are moving to Fla in 2 weeks. The plan is to come back but I highly doubt my kids will want to come back to NYC after living in Fla. DH does not want to come back to the city. My plan is to drop kids off at school and hit the beach everyday. I had to quit my job Bc they would not allow remote out of state
we moved to fla and will stay till schools in NYC reliably back in person 5 days.

what is their long term or medium term plan do you know?

Friends of ours are renting a house in FL for the school year. Still own their home up here but haven't decided whether they're coming back or not.
Are schools holding spots for families who have moved out of nyc but might return later?
only if the family paid for the year
Are the schools that are open even worth it?
Mediocre in-person school is still way better than TT remote school. And yes, most of the fancy private schools are open in FL.

@Anonymous Please tell me this is a joke and you haven't written off the educational value of 100% of schools south of the Mason Dixon line?

Do they expect schools to "manage" the flu every year? You get sick, you stay home for a few days, and you come back.
Yeah. COVID is just like the flu and schools should do nothing when members of the community have potentially exposed others.
