I have just been informed that I am WFH forever. I hate it and would like to go back to an office. However, maybe it’s an opportunity to leave NY. I have school age children - where should we move?
I find it fascinating that not one comment on here takes family into account. For me, that would be the biggest driver - proximity to my parents, siblings, inlaws etc.
Same. We could live anywhere, and choose to live in NYC (without "affordable" housing). It's odd to me that I see so many threads about people feeling "stuck" in NYC -- why? Family? Job? (In those cases, couldn't you at least do neighboring suburbs?) It's so expensive to live here that it should hopefully be a choice, and a choice you are willing to pay a huge premium for. I wish we wanted to live elsewhere because our lifestyle would be a lot cheaper.
Own both. One fully paid off and the other will be substantially mortgaged. I don't want to rent out either, don't need someone else trashing my place. 2nd home is commuting distance to NYC so we plan to be there regularly on weekends and vacations.
What is your income? Could you manage a NYC apartment and a second home? This is the compromise we came to. It took some serious financial planning and commitment. DH wants the burbs, I want the City, so this way we have a foot in each. Once the kids are grown we may downsize one of the two homes, or just forfeit one altogether to cash it out.
2Nd home is northern burbs. Nice town with good schools but we are keeping kids in nyc private esp during Covid as they are in person more so than the zoned public where 2nd home is.
San Diego. Great weather, beaches, good Mexican food, chill lifestyle, but still a big enough city that you have sports, some culture, restaurants. And driving distance to LA if you want more culture.
Well what kind of lifestyle are you after? Is it possible you could find a different job that one day brings you back to an NYC office? It seems like jumping the gun to make such a sudden decision
La Jolla
You might be one of the few with nearby relatives. My family is all over the country.

If I could live anywhere but would stay in NYC. I just enjoy it here (admittedly, I have affordable housing)
We need budget and preferences. I would love to live somewhere with 4 seasons and close to great skiing.

East Hampton, love the beach
School age meaning how old? ES or MS/HS? What do you care about? culture? weather? sports? Where are you and DH from originally?

What do you even like? Cultural offerings and city lifestyle? Mountains: hiking/skiing? Beach and sunny/hot weather? You have to give us more info.
Wow! What industry? This is my DH's dream, btw. He hates going into the office.
