for the grandfather whose granddaughter fell to her death? The plea is guilty without admission of facts and no jail time. I mean, honestly. What is the point of that? To give an old man a record? It's surely not a deterrent since jail time is the real deterrent. I really don't understand what those prosecutors are on about. Seems like a tragedy all the way around and a complete waste of time and resources to go after him only to end with this result.

He is being charged with a crime. If he wanted to exonerate himself, he’d have to go to trial. If found guilty of negligent homicide, he could find himself with jail time. This plea deal avoids that.
I understand all of that and agree. What I’m asking is: what is the prosecutorial point?
I think it was to discourage other people from being so cavalier about the safety of children in their care...even if they are family and even if it's for a very short time. We know so little about how the brain works (witness children left in hot cars) that it certainly can't hurt to have as a data point that if you let that child hanging in the window drop you'll possibly lose your voting rights ....
@Anonymous also he didn’t admit fault. Didn’t they sue the cruise Company?!
Hmmm. I can't imagine voting matters that much to people inclined to do something that could then or later be construed as negligent . . .
@Anonymous so unfair. It was reported that the child had banged on the glass many times before the incident. Tragic accidents happen, that poor man should just be left alone. Don’t you think he’s living in hell already?
Maybe to counter the crazy allegations of the parents and grandparents that Royal Caribbean was at fault plus their related lawsuit to extract millions.
I’m not sure it’s crazy that royal Caribbean was at fault, but in any event, there is no admission of facts in the plea, and it’s the parents suing royal Caribbean, so not sure it changes anything. it’s just mind boggling to me.
