DS10yo is having a terrible time in math. He doesn't understand the homework. I spent about 2 hr with him last night and another hour this morning. I'm explaining it in as many different concrete ways as I can, but it's just not sinking in. He just had remote math class... he says all the other kids get it and he doesn't. I'm at a loss. I'm reluctant to ask teacher for help. She's well aware that DS doesn't get it because he's honest, he says "I have no idea what to do" in front of the whole class. Teacher seems completely overwhelmed/unengaged; she does the lessons and gives assignments but never checks assignments or gives any feedback.
Math is typically not hard for DS so the idea of hiring a tutor because of this seems silly. But the idea of putting in another hour or two trying to work with DS tonight fills me with dread.
Any ideas for me? DH tried to step in last night and explain, but he was making it worse because he doesn't understand the methods by which DS is supposed to be solving these problems. It's Engage NYC / Eureka Math, by the way, and I know from another parent that the teacher doesn't even like this curriculum and thinks math should be taught "the old-fashioned way."
