Yoga can be very challenging/athletic. Just all depends on type of yoga and the level of intensity. Some types of yoga are more geared towards stretching and meditative/restorative. Some are more fast paced with challenging poses.
I do power/ashtanga yoga. Those are the most challenging. I find all the yogis who are also super fit are also vegan or eat like birds. I got into better shape doing Pilates and spin than yoga though.

To quiet your mind and be present. However you need to get there. For some that’s intensity. For some it’s just sitting.
For me, it's mostly to be bored out of my mind. But it does help with flexibility.
