Our weekends used to be filled with organized sports. Now in the city, I find it hard to fill the weekend without resorting to letting the kids have lots of screen time.
We usually get takeout picnic lunch and go to a park--central park, van cortlandt park--or a city beach. Last weekend we went to coney island, the week before to the rockaways. I have a car, though.
Similar here. We go to park with snacks/food and a variety of balls (football/ soccer), frisbees, etc, and play. We have two boys though and they go batshit crazy if indoors all day.
Lots of screen time here. Long walks. (DH will take one alone, I will do one alone if I'm fed up with everyone, and then we drag the kid out). Playground early or late in the day is good to let the kids play basketball or ride bikes/scooters. I wish I could report that we are one of those families hanging out, doing puzzles, playing Scrabble...alas NO. This Sunday we let our kid "meet up" with classmate via zoom and while they all played Roblox, we watched a movie and had a few beers. It was fairly glorious for Summer 2020.
Get groceries delivered, do some cooking and baking, sit outside reading or go in the backyard pool, go for a walk, watch movies. A couple of times now we've had friends come by and visit outside. I have two neighbors I walk with regularly and whose kids we allow over inside to play with my dc. It's not as exciting as summers past and is especially hard on dcs who are used to sleepaway camp and vacations and tons of playdates that are not happening. But it's not terrible.
DH an i each take a long walk alone and then the whole family takes one in the evening to pick up food and have a picnic dinner, or we eat at home but take a walk together fro ice cream after. we also often play board games or do a puzzle.
My in laws have a country house and we go there for an afternoon because it’s our only access to a pool. FIL and MIL don’t get along so they are always up our asses the entire time. So it’s not the perfect day but I have no other suggestions.
We sometimes go out to eat outside or walk around the park.
OP -- Thanks for the suggestions. We go to the park too but it's not enough to fill the whole day. I'll try your suggestions of taking a picnic lunch out. And I didn't realize zoos and the gardens are open. Definitely adding those to the list. Thanks!
Check in advance because I think the gardens and zoos are opening at reduced capacity and you have to reserve a timed entry slot. Same for governors island.
We do a whole lot of nothing. One of my kids actually got to go to sleep away camp. My high schooler is on the computer/video games pretty much all day.

^but now zoos and botanical gardens are open, so we're excited about that.
Not much screen time over here
