I think it really depends on the size of the family and then also the layout. I think 1000 square feet or less is a small apartment for a family, but that would have been enormous for me as a single person. I consider anything above 2000 square feet to be a fairly large NYC apartment.

two adults and one child, anything under 1200 sq ft is too small. 1200-1500 about right, >1600 spacious. That said, all depends on a layout.
Mine. 1000 sq feet, 2 adults and 2 kids (pre-teen and teen). It's painful.
Same exact situation here. This same apartment was perfect when it was just me and my dh.
Ugh. Same here. I have a 13 and 15 year old so college is around the corner for the oldest (sniff, sniff), but this place is too small.
