no. the moderna and pfizer vaccines at least, can be modified to address new variants as needed, and as transmission in general drops off post-vax, so will the development and spread of new variants.
It will be like the flu, we're probably going to have to get at least 1 shot a year (probably more in the short term) for the rest of our lives. There is a chance it mutates and becomes a lot more severe, but if we can get the initial pandemic under control we might be able to better contain that. If it happens within the next year though, IDK, we might be screwed.

moderna said it would make a booster shot for the new variants.....imagine getting a 3rd vaccine shot when the first one seems so far away.

Pfizer and Moderna both said the current vaccine works fine for the S African variant. Seems like the Brazil one is more problematic.
