I have had a long term health issue with severe and debilitating migraines. I’ve been seeing a neuro for over 15 years because they can feel so paralyzing and at times if I’m stressed I need major down time. I got a call from my neuros office today to ask if I wanted a letter so I could get the vaccine, would it be unethical of me to do so?
I’m curious how migraines make you higher risk, and what your neurologist’s incentive is in bumping you up the line for this.
Im completely debilitated when I get a bad one, often for a week at a time. I end up taking really strong meds and staying in bed as I can’t function.
Right, but does this make you higher risk for poor outcome w Covid, along the lines of obesity, underlying lung disease, etc
I do believe it makes me higher risk, Im flat out for days and often need to get a scan so I’m exposed to more risk as a result. Neuro is listed as a vulnerability on the new NY list
If it doesn’t feel right...
I’m not sure if it does or not, that’s why I posted for other perspectives. I completely agree with the poster below who said that the more of us who get this and the sooner the better it will be for all
Sounds like you qualify under - Neurologic conditions including but not limited to Alzheimer's Disease or dementia.
i think anyone who remotely qualifies should get a vaccine. The more people that get it the better off everyone is. limiting the eligible groups just slows down the pace of vaccinations
Yes I got the impression they had a standard letter ready to go for all regular patients
I live outside of Ny, but my impression in NYS is that the slowness is due to lack of vaccine. Upstate where my elderly parents are, appointments keep getting canceled for lack of available vaccine to give. So hearing this makes it seem like doses are being diverted elsewhere?
@Anonymous The letter doesn't guarantee an appointment. OP may still have to wait.
If your doctor is willing to give you a letter, then it's not unethical to take the vaccine. they have medically determined that you qualify under applicable rules. Take it and be well.

In looking at this article you should feel very comfortable getting the vaccine once you are eligible on the 15th. Very disappointing that the rollout is going so badly.
Curious how you can get a spot? I qualify as of 2/15 as well (on immune comp meds) but it seems impossible to get an appt.
OP I’ve no idea, I didn’t even receive the letter yet. I did Read an article in yesterdays NYT that there are a lot of volunteers helping people to set up appointments
Interesting take on this in yesterday’s Up First podcast (2/6/21).
