I am currently in a position that I absolutely hate, and it’s causing me to be miserable in my personal life. A df said to me “you need to learn to find happiness in other things outside of work.” I’m very career focused and, while I love my family, I also need to be relatively happy at work in order to be happy overall in life. Thoughts? How can I change the way I feel? Tia.
You don't need to try to change your feelings. You need a new job.
Op: yes actively looking
Work is a big chunk of your time. I think there is a difference between absolutely hate and doing a job that might not be your passion.
Op: yes you’re right. I left a job that was my passion because the commute and office culture was so bad that I lost about 10lbs in first 6 months. When I realized I could no longer continue the way that I was, I left and moved to this one. While it is extremely low stress and relatively easy (with good hours and quality of life), I’m not passionate about the work itself, which is causing me to hate the job. Maybe I’m looking for a unicorn? I don’t know.
everything is a choice. Choose to be grateful that that you're gainfully employed. Would you be happier unemployed? If so, then quit. If not, the next change your perspective and, in so doing, change your life.
Op: can’t afford to leave this job so I’m trying....thanks.
I was in a toxic work situation for a long time - I’ve finally moved on and am like a new person. Doesn’t sound like your job is toxic but if it is to your soul you should keep looking. You wouldn’t settle in other areas? So don’t settle here
Op: that’s exactly it....definitely not toxic environment, but not being mentally stimulated which makes me unhappy. While I do my work, I am not interested in anything about the position and challenging to stay motivated. Thanks for your opinion.
