Depends on your "brand" and purpose of the site. I think .com always seems slightly more professional than the newer extensions, but I also think .nyc works in a cheeky way for portfolio type sites, or agencies. Have a friend who is an editorial photographer and the .nyc works for his site. But that's really the only consideration, there's no technical reason why .nyc or .com are better or worse for search engines or anything else
Not a tech mom by any stretch, but if you ever hope to reach an audience beyond nyc for any reason, choose .com
