I honestly don't think so. I feel like I wasted so much of my education on spelling, handwriting, etc. I work in a visual arts field and have met a lot of very successful people who can't spell, have chicken-scratch writing, etc. There seems to be some kind of correlation in this area between people who express themselves very well visually but have some issues with language/writing. It's usually all good and is no reflection on their other talents or intelligence. And nowadays we have spellcheck and autocorrect, etc.
You should probably be on alert for actual LDs, but I wouldn't worry about just spelling.
I'm sure there will be a lot of other people who would tell you that it will doom your kid, but that's my two cents.
7yo's aren't supposed to know how to spell. If your DC is sounding out words and spelling them as best as he/she can, that shows creativity and effort and resilience.

I think most 7yo have terrible spelling. If DC is reading just fine for grade level then I wouldn't worry about this at all.
