We have two DCs who we walk to school a few blocks from our apartment. We have the choice to either remote learn or attend in person, most families plan to attend in person. DH feels strongly that it’s safer for us to stay where we are upstate, but I want our DCs to at least start school with their peers and meet their new teachers. I think we’re relatively safe as it‘s a small private school, we walk to it from our apartment, a lot of people have moved out of our apartment building though we would need to take the elevators. One of our DCs has asthma and this is why DH is so against it. DH works from home and won’t go back to the office before 2021
I like your strategy of your dc meeting their teachers and classmates first. Infection rates are so low. If it gets worse, leave then. But at least you used the relatively safe days for your dc to connect better.
Thanks. My DH doesn’t agree though and I dont want to push him on it and then have some of us get sick
@Anonymous OK. Then I don't understand your question about being torn? It sounds like you made up your mind.
@Anonymous OP - DH doesnt agree with me so DCs won’t be going to school. That’s why I’m torn
Go back. Better for the kids IMHO to learn in person however it's presented. Give them some semblance of routine.
we are in exact same situ minus the asthma. we are going back but I have some anxiety and sure if you add asthma into it that increases. We should all remember though that covid mortality among kids remains so low even taking into consideration other factors.
@Anonymous OP - yes good point. Also I believe that other NY neighborhoods and cohorts are more likely to have a spike before we do, at which point we’d leave
Try to get a grip. There were about 40 positive Covid tests in Manhattan yesterday. There are 5 million people on this island. The odds of your child contracting Covid from your building elevator is basically zero.
I feel like people have really lost their minds over this.
Funny, someone told me to “get a grip as I was moving up my flight to Mar 12 and pulling the kids from school. OP is concerned about what will happen in the fall/winter, as she should be. Take a look at Spain which had a far more severe lockdown than NY did.
@Anonymous Her post says she's debating whether it's safe to come back for a few weeks so her kids can meet their teachers and start school in person. Of course, if numbers start going back up, there would be no debate about what to do.
I would stay put in your situation.
I would speak to your doctors in assessing the situation. And FWIW the parents I know who have consulted with their doctors (including those with underlying conditions) were all advised that from a health perspective, it is advisable for the kids to be in school if possible. (That's of course in the NYC area, not in places like Georgia.)
