I would definitely get a lake house if it were an option. But you are against everything that the vast majority would like. I remember you hate apartments by the beach too.
@Anonymous I think that tying together people's posts like this might have the unintended consequence of stifling open conversation. You do you, but would you consider a different approach?
Our weekend place is just under an hour from our apartment - makes it very easy to do a quick overnight trip if the whole weekend isn't a possibility for whatever reason.
That would be dreamy actually, kid could still do weekend sports, see his friends if he wanted... I grew up in a small town down south where lots of families had a lake house nearby. If you actually lived out by the lake though there were no town services, school district was not great, etc. It was great to be able to go hang out at the lake on weekends and summer days though!
Agree--it sounds ideal. You could even entertain for the day (if we ever entertain again) and not have to deal with overnight guests. But as the mom of teens, my mind does go to the kind of trouble they could get into there. I'd definitely keep it monitored to make sure they weren't using it when they weren't supposed to.
we bought 2nd home without prioritizing kids as they are already tween and teen. House is near enough to the City, could be our primary or only home one day / doable for retirement.
Obviously very convenient but I can see why you're hesitant. Something about it being so close makes it feel a bit boring. Not a bad option to have though!
Of course not! I mean unless you already live on a lake. That would be weird :-)
Short drive to second home would be great.
If I had a house I wouldn't take on a second house but that's just me. Join a pool or a club instead.

agreed, these kinds of responses sound creepy
