Poster who said this yesterday on the school closing thread, (or anyone else who knows) do you remember where you heard/read it? Can’t find it so far, but would LOVE to conform it, and to stop expecting that the moment the city goes from 2 to 3% my coach is going to turn back into a pumpkin. It would also affect people’s winter plans for visiting/quarantining and for childcare. Thanks for any leads.

My recollection is that its Cuomo who said this. Deblasio has to follow.
I posted on this thread saying that you should just expect the unexpected. At this point, it is very very difficult to shut down, and they know that if they close the school system it will be difficult to reopen. Just as other "rules" have changed, I highly doubt they are going to stick to the 2% or 5% rule. However, in practice, if cases are higher, schools will increase =the frequency in which they will have to shut down due to in-school cases.
I don't think everything will shut down but I do think the UFT will make sure NYC public schools do.
@MidtownMom Stop with the school bashing. They have done amazing job planing for this reopening. Of course if the rates are high and more and more students or teachers get sick, they will want to close.
@Anon How in God's name am I school bashing?
OP: Numbers still rising :facepalm. I like Cuomo’s setup for closing schools by neighborhood and reopening with more testing, like for the October spike. His cutoff numbers ( https://nyassembly.gov/coronavirus/?sec=updates_nys and https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-cuomo-releases-guidelines-testing-protocol-schools-reopen-red-or-orange-micro-cluster ) are higher than the ones that the city lists (2 cases in a school and it closes) https://www.schools.nyc.gov/school-year-20-21/return-to-school-2020/health-and-safety#jump-to-heading-0
I can’t figure out if there are recent closings other than October / South Brooklyn that tell us which numbers they have been working with.
Has anyone’s public school been closed over two positive tests? Who calls the principal to say “game over”?
The UFT agreement that let schools reopen refers to the original 3% positive seven-day-rolling-average threshold https://www.uft.org/news/press-releases/uft-fact-sheet-on-school-opening-agreement but school transmission has been so low that maybe they’ll be willing to try a Cuomo plan? I can dream?
Crap. I knew I’d seen this map somewhere, and yes, they have been closing lots of individual classrooms and schools—on the city’s cutoff numbers, since this is a city site. https://www.schools.nyc.gov/school-year-20-21/return-to-school-2020/health-and-safety/daily-covid-case-map That doesn’t completely guarantee they will stick by the (city’s) 3% 7-day threshold and close the whole system down then, but it does make it look likely. The lower cutoff numbers are being enforced.
Maybe Cuomo-style neighborhood-level interventions can keep it from ever getting to 3%? Please.

<begin meditation on expecting the unexpected>
Wagner just went remote for 2 weeks because of 2 positives tests. I believe the DOH advises them what to do
It doesn't make sense to keep to the 3% threshold for all of NYC . Manhattan cases are below 1% . Sadly, Staten Island is still part of NYC and is at 6%. Why is Staten Island even a borough? Should be part of NJ.
ITA. Some Brooklyn zip codes are below 1% too.
Staten Island would love to secede from NYC. For real - there were attempts at exploring this and legislation, didn't go anywhere.
Gah. The mayor just said that he’s sticking with 3% closing plan.
They will (duh) try to avoid getting to that point—b/c why kill more people?
