With the lottery we will most likely end up in our zoned school Wagner but.... having trouble deciding if should even rank other schools that will require a commute via bus or subway. DD really hesitant right now but wondering if something she’ll get over quickly. We are in East 90s and would like her to consider Clinton, Salk, Nest, etc but don’t want to force her. Thoughts?
IMO Nest and Clinton are worth it for the HS option. But good luck getting a spot Nest! They apparently have fewer open spots than usual and most are probably for the ICT class.
Oh I totally know its a long shot! But I do want to rank in the order we truly want since someone has to get a good lottery number, right?
@Anonymous Absolutely! We are on the UWS and will rank NEST first. In the event that DS gets in - which he won't - we'll deal with it.
Beyond that our ranking is - the schools we actually want (3), followed by the schools that are closest to us. The latter are all pretty bad, but I figure if my kid is going to go to a crappy school, it's better if it's closer to home. At least he can sleep later.
Anyway, I don't know that that helps with your dilemma, but since most D2 middle schools are good, I'd put a premium on proximity, unless the school offers something extra like a high school spot.
My DS commuted to Wagner from downtown and I wouldn't do it again. This time around I'm putting a hard 30 minute time limit on the communte, no changing .
The commute to Clinton isn't bad at all from the UES. Clinton is VERY close to the 14th street subway stop.
I think it really depends on your kid. Mine started 6th grade with a very long commute that required her to leave the house by 6:30 a.m. She was totally miserable and sleep deprived and we took her out. But friends of hers were happy there and didn't mind the commute.
Wow... I can't even imagine this. My MS wakes up at 7:30!
Nest is far for you, I wouldn't bother. The closest subway is a 20 min walk from the school and the city bus that goes there from the subway rarely runs. Without G & T tests, the school will probably just become a gen ed school so not work the extra commute.
