Does he really want the position with all the additional responsibilities? Its OK to not want this. For example, my DH was encouraged to go for VP positions, but he chose not to due to the extra travel, longer working hours, etc. Not everyone is willing/happy to sacrifice their personal life for a promotion.
Just let him talk and listen without "fixing" him or offering advice. Hopefully, he will talk his anxiety out with you and not at work, where he could screw things up if he comes across as too high maintenance. Good luck to him.
