Yes. A little over one-half of percent of our income (I just did the math) in the fall, knowing that we will give the same in the spring. Plus we have employee matching, so it ends up being a little over 2.5% of our income (though only half comes from us) when all is said and done. In up years, it is around 4% (including matching).
No concrete reason for the percentage. I calculated many years ago (pre-marriage and pre-kids) that I was giving around 1% of my income to charity, so now I try to maintain that amount.
School gets the biggest chunk, and we give smaller amounts ($50-$100, here and there) to a variety of other organizations throughout the year. We recognize that while we have much less than many of the families at our private schools, we still have far more than so many other people in NYC.
That said, I agree with the previous poster: the most important part of annual giving is participation at any level.
We are not currently at private but we used to give 1,000 per year when we were there. I asked around and heard that 1000 was the generally considered minimum donation amount for full pay families. Also usually purchased 1500-4000 of stuff at the auction.
We donated $500 this fall for high school
Our school asks for donations to the scholarship fund, then donations at the holidays, then donations to the school fund. It’s never ending
I know, it's exhausting.

This seems like a large percentage of your income. Any reason you choose to give so much?

Yes, but not a huge amount. We take the view that participation is most important, not the amount.
