State school and help as much as you can DC to buy his/her first home quickly.
The fact that college is so expensive that people need to decide whether to pay for it or buy a house is mind boggling. I vote for free college in Europe. The education is at least as good and challenging there.

@Anonymous I'm sure I am going to be seen as the shit stirrer here but this is my take. You made a commitment to the school. Stick with it, if at all financially possible. If you want the school to be there - the staff, the facilities, the programming - when this ends - and it will - you need to hold up your end of the deal and pay for school. If you truly aren't married to this particular school then leave. I would not permit my kids to take a gap year. You're with that university. Thick or thin
