We have two 12 year old labs, and one is failing. She still has her indomitable spirit. She still loves going for walks and swimming (heck, she can still pull me down the street). But she has a degenerative spine condition that is resulting in poor control of her hind legs, complete fecal incontinence, and now recurrent urinary tract infections and urinary incontinence. Since about January, she has literally been in one antibiotic after another with only a week or so between. Each time with a new UTI, often a different bacteria. In addition, she's on pain meds as well as estrogen (to help the urinary incontinence, though I don't think it's doing much). These are our first pets we've had as adults. I thought it would be more obvious when it was time to put down a dog, but I'm finding it's not so clear. Are we crazy to be sticking it out so long? If she still seems happy on walks, does it make sense to hold on? What has your experience been? Thanks, ladies.
