Has anyone gotten a neuropysch eval. (adhd) from a very reputable place/doctor, presented it to your child's public school (upper elementary grade) and school committee deemed no services necessary and student is at grade level?
yes. they'll do anything to get out of providing services. you need to lawyer up and /or speak to Sarah Birnbaum who's seen every single possible situation before - https://nyspecialneeds.com/
the evaluation recommended OT, reading support, but the school/teachers saying he is progressing just fine and basically on grade level, but again the reports made so many recommendations for academic support
@anonymous My child is in HS but he had some services in k-8. He was not an extreme case. You have to be a squeaky wheel. Have you talked to your child's teachers? What are they saying about your child in the classroom (pre-pandemic). Is your child taking medication for adhd? It's hard to give advice not know what the recommendations are.
In general if the child is meeting benchmarks and performing at grade level they do not see the need to offer services. You have to be persistent - we had to have our child evaluated twice by the DOE CSE, it took two years to get services in place and that was WITH our school supporting us. What services are you looking for? Is it something that could be accomplished with a 504 plan and not an IEP?
the eval was done by an outside extremely reputable place (PHD)- are you saying its better/easier to get services if the eval is done by the doe rather than the outside? 504 would not really help/be effective in this case
I would consider going to a private special Ed and suing for tuition reimbursement. the school isn't giving you what you need and it will only be unhappy for your kid.
You could ask the NP to call the school and push for more services. You could also go to a private school and then sue the City for tuition reimbursement

May I ask what type of services you were requesting? I also agree with above poster to not take no for an answer and maybe lawyer up.

This is so helpful thank you. So how do they decide which kids they actually wi
Meant to say so how do they decide who they actually will give services to? Only in extreme cases?

I would definitely ask for a DOE evaluation. It will probably back up what your private evaluation said and force their hand.

this is for a public school..not private
No difference. Go to a school that will provide the supports he needs, willingly and will collaborate with you to best serve the child.

Or ask the DoE to assign your kid to a new school that might give him services?
