Shouldn’t you maybe tell us more about your likes and dislikes so that we can make a recommendation? Every place is “close to the ocean” and many have acceptable private schools. What is your job situation?
Thanks. We work from home and can work from anywhere, so thats a luxury. Otherwise we‘re catholic, well traveled, love the culture and anonymity of NYC but ready for a change. DCs are in 4th and 2nd grade and we all play tennis. Would prefer to live in a house versus an apartment if possible, expect to rent for the first year though
Thanks so much!
What’s your budget to rent a house? Most houses in Miami are not that close to the ocean. Other areas in south FL are not that catholic. There are lots of catholic private schools in Miami and tennis is ubiquitous. If you have boys, there are 2 well known catholic boys schools. 1 is Belen and I am sure you can find out the other one. Palm Beach is obviously nicer and more cultured than Miami but it’s not catholic and it’s of course more expensive. Jupiter is well known, people like living there with their families and it’s by the ocean. Same goes for Delray Beach. I would rent a house for a month or two and drive by these towns and spend some time there, so you can make a more informed decision. Note that there is zero culture outside of Miami and maybe Palm beach but since you didn’t mention that culture is important to you, it might not matter.
We don’t have budgetary constraint, just want to find comfort and a great fit.
does Palm Beach have a lot of young families? I’ve always thought of it as more of a retirement community
we are here and are considering moving. palm beach/ delray/ palm beach gardens is all sort of one large area you could canvass (where we are) - or the miami area. pros: great weather, good privates that are half the price of nyc, people moving down in droves so real estate will only go up, house/ yard/ pool - life with kids easier. cons; if you love NYC and its culture and entertainment then you will be bored. honestly we live in nyc and rarely enjoy it because we have small kids who are hopped up on energy and terrible behavior and the stress of NYC affordability even in mid six figures is overwhelming - so making life easier, esp during covid, is priority.
I just want to add a PSA: private school tuition in South FL is not half of that in NY. The good schools in Miami charge around 37k-39k. That’s not half of 54k (Dalton). Also, remember that there are horrendous real estate taxes (2% of purchase price), and you need at least 2 well functioning cars. Everything good is private here, as there’s no income tax; yet there is no real donor base, so even cultural institutions are extremely underfunded and underdeveloped. If I could choose, NYC would be my permanent home and FL would be my winter vacation home. Fwiw, I know several people who moved back to NYC once kids were in college.
I'm sorry but show me a school in palm beach county that has tuition for any grade in excess of $30k. Most are more like $25. Pinecrest is the number one private in the Miami area and its fees top out at $35k. Florida has no state income taxes and real estate is far less expensive than NYC. so you're patently wrong.
You keep asking everyone nonstop for school recommendations, and NOW you are the expert? Pinecrest school is not in Miami - the schools in Miami charge more. You have an internet connection, just use google if you don’t believe me.
^ and yes, I know real estate is cheaper. I never stated otherwise. But you will live in suburbia for the most part and could do the same thing for a similar price in Westchester or NJ. But people underestimate the costs when they move down to SFL. I have no horse in this race and you feel personally attacked (why??) - real estate taxes are a real thing and so is high homeowners insurance which is a nonissue in NYC. Everything else costs the same. I am starting to think you’re a Floridian realtor who is hoping for clientele from NYC.
Are you the OP? I agree with Sarasota, which has an amazing public school (best in the nation - Pineview) and also recommend Naples. Much nicer than the Southeast IMO, but lots of Trumpers, not sure if that bothers you.
I'm from Florida and still have family there. For a long time, I considered moving back. Now, I'm not so sure. The move to the political right by people in the state is discouraging. Even some of my sane family members voted for Trump at the last minute. It's disappointing.

Did you move to FL yet? Or still in NY?
do you know of any resources so we could get up to speed on the schools quickly? That will be the biggest driver for us. Thanks

Jupiter, Palm beach, Del Ray, boca are all nice areas. I personally hate Miami. Sarasota on the West coast is nice too
Thank you. We’re looking at Boca and Del Ray so far

OP here we don’t love trumpers But will keep that to ourselves. We’ll look into pineview and Naples. Thanks
