I switched from a super progressive school to a traditional one. It’s a little crazy how much people pay for such little teaching.

Your post title makes it sound Like the traditional school does less teaching...?

We can't afford private, but I toured a DOE progressive school and decided it's not for me.
IMO private tuition is for suckers, no matter what they are or aren't teaching.
I think you are confusing "teaching" with lecturing, test prep, and memorization. Progressive schools are more about critical thinking and in-depth research. But if you're paying for education, you should definitely get what you want.
This. I was going to ask what grade also, because from what I've seen/heard progressive ed in lower grades can look a lot like they're just messing around--it's not until they're older that it becomes apparent that the skills they were learning have set them up to learn more independently in MS/HS.
DD went from a small progressive D2 middle school to Bronx Science, which was super-traditional. She preferred the latter, so it really does depend on the individual.
