This. I'm furious at how badly DB has screwed up, but he's just a regular, common-or-garden incompetent leader. Trump is an existential threat to democracy.
@anonymous he gave his wife billions to help the homeless and we aren't sure where the money went. The homeless are in much worse shape under his admin than Bloomberg's. He's lazy. He's slow. he Ran for president and left nyc in tatters. He's awful in the budget. What is there to like?

My theory is that deBlasio thought the mayoralty would somehow catapult him to the presidency. When that didn't pan out (in part because he had so few accomplishments as Mayor) and he ended his campaign in disgrace, he was done. He lost all interest in doing his job. Then the pandemic hit, and many of his high-ranking appointees resigned. And Cuomo stole the limelight and undermined him at every turn. So, he's deflated and lost and can't rise to the occasion. I'm disappointed in him, but I don't hate him. It's just sad.
We have something similar in LA with Garcetti. Clearly his ambition is to be president and he thought covid would be his ticket... but terribly mishandled in california and LA. Now we don't hear a peep from him.
I don't think Deblasio is much different now than he was before the presidential campaign. He is lazy, incompetent unethical and crooked (pay to play) - its just more visible/exacerbated now with pandemic.
I think he's a crook. His wife has a whole staff and millions of dollars while critical fund are stripped from our schools, our police force and our sanitation department. Shame on him.
If public schools open it will be despite de B, not because of him. He and Carranza spent the summer making grandiloquent claims about reopening, and left it until last month to actually begin any concrete planning. Months were wasted when the DOE's wheels should have been in motion: inspecting schools, repairing ventilation, ordering supplies, hiring nurses and teachers, etc etc. They only lifted the hiring freeze last Tuesday, when the original re-opening day was supposed to be last Thursday!

He is totally a crook and a complete failure who is hell-bent on destroying this city.
I think he's not a crook or disinterested. He's idealistic to a fault. It's as if he felt that just wanting something to happen is the same as it happening. Wanting housing and jobs for people is not as easy as just willing it to happen. Wanting schools for people is not as easy as just willing it.
Why now in particular?
I dislike DeB but it’s nowhere near as much as I hate 45.
I don't hate DeBlasio. I think he's a very ineffective leader, but I don't think he's a bad person at heart. Unlike the Orange One.

I have generally hated him but if public schools actually open for in person Hybrid then I will hate Him a little less
