not the type of nyc townhouse you dream of living in. Rather a cute one in the burbs. Im sure many would refer to it as a starter house, but we are almost finished. My daughter goes to college next year and my son is starting high school. It’s really beautifully furnished and comfortable but certainly not luxurius at all. I kind of reconciled my mixed feelings about staying in it and not upgrading bc I work and I didn’t want more financial
pressure. I wanted less.
it will probably be paid off this year. That being said, there is not enough closet Space, the backyard is tiny and sometimes I feel sorry that I never tried for more. I guess the catalyst for this post is someone nearby selling their house for more space...anyway just venting and feeling like a big loser. Thx
Why are you beating yourself up? I'm sure plenty of us in the city would be happy to have your set up. It sounds like it works for you- all good.
Thank you ❤️
You live in a cute, beautifully furnished, comfortable house with a backyard, where the kids have their own rooms, and you are about to be mortgage-free. Sounds like a great decision. Everything in life is a trade-off. So you wish you had more closet space. Instead you can send your kids off to college without a major debt burden. What am I missing?
Thank you ❤️
I live in apartment which is too small, but which has allowed us to save. During the current pandemic, I am so relieved that I don't have financial stress over us. Even if DH loses his job, we can still meet payments on the apartment. OTOH, I'm sad because we're in a place which is too small for sheltering in place. OTOH, if we need to sell and leave the City, we won't be too much out on our investment. I guess I'm saying that everything has pluses and minuses, and we live with what we have.
Thank you ❤️
The grass is always greener. It seems you have a great balance of space and cost. I am now looking at burb houses and have mostly 2 choices - old, very small houses or new, very large ones. I wish i could find th esweet spot you have.
When you pay it off, treat yourself to a consult with a storage professional and have some wall units built in to key rooms where you feel storage is lacking. Also once the kids are really out on their own, you will have SO much more storage. You are doing the right thing.
There are storage professionals? (signed mom with too small space who dreams of more efficient layout)
@Anonymous totally! Call in a professional organizer to help you go through everything and decide what to toss/keep and develop a plan to store what is left most efficiently. If you are confident about doing that yourself, call in a cabinetry company to help you custom design a few wall storage units. Someone like transFORM or Little Wolf. Work with a cabinetry company that has on staff designers who can come to your house and see your style, possessions themselves.
@Anonymous California Closets do free consultations and are pretty good.
Declutter and remodel some rooms. Soon you won't be that young anymore and imo, it's better to have a cute&manageable house, than too much space. On top of that, a "starter house" always finds a buyer, but a big house is harder to sell in a hurry.
Comparison is the root of ALL unhappiness. You truly need to start taking a few moments each night saying what you are grateful for. Posts like this make me sad. We are only on the planet for SUCH a short time -- fretting over this means you are missing the beauty, wonder and awe of being alive.
Thank you ❤️
