My oldest was on a similar track. I wish I had worked more on his writing and retelling skills. He's still a speed reader and has an almost photographic memory but he's neither a genius nor a savant.
I think some read early. Mine did this at 4. I think it's important to make sure they understand, and stop to understand if they don't. I do know hyperlexia is also associated with ASD, so if there are other concerns I'd seek an evaluation. I also wouldn't assume he's a genius just yet. I talked in full sentences and had full conversations at 7 months. I'm pretty smart but nothing special.
Mine was like this too - I was also worried. He's fine - not a genius but smart - attends Hunter (though is not a top student there by any means, because he's not really a hard worker- that's another story).
I was like that as a child. I started spontaneously reading at age 2 and have devoured books my whole life. I don't think anyone would call me a genius and while I always did well in school I wasn't the valedictorian or anything.
Foster that love of reading, it is still one of my most favorite activities and I'm glad my parents surrounded me with good books. I'll also reiterate what a poster above says in that some kids read really early and have no comprehension skills - make sure to have lots of conversation with your child about what they are reading! My child did not read early and it was...interesting to see the parents whose children read early but did not have an equal level of comprehension, they would get so mad at the teachers for assigning "lower" reading levels!
