How long do you think public schools will stay open ?
I saw predictions on here that they would never open, then close before Halloween. Looks like we are making it to Halloween. How long do you think this can go ?
Thanksgiving. I can't fathom going beyond that. Too many people traveling, seeing family etc and private schools have already decided to close between then and mid-January.
You really can't fathom going beyond that? Now that schools are open, the DoE is going to do everything it can to keep them open. Unless we see >3% positivity rate for a trailing 7-day average (which we are nowhere near right now), they're going to stay open.
Interesting. I originally thought Thanksgiving, but now I think you are right, more like winter break. If the Thanksgiving travel causes spikes in infection rates, it will take a couple of weeks to show up - so we are looking at mid December. But, if the random testing is rolled out further, and our rates stay low, maybe schools will continue to stay open with certain clusters/schools closing in 2 week cycles. Who knows, I didn't think schools would open at all .
NYC Public schools are on a good track. The random testing shows Covid is not that rampant in school. I think it will be fine and more people will send their kids into school for the next November opt in.
why are you assuming the worst? maybe..they wont close at all!! there are no signs of major covid cases whatsoever at schools through the testing they have done and the percentage rate, especially in Manhattan is not close to 3 percent. please stop projecting...
@anonymous Some of my DC are in public and some are in private, and I can still say I'm getting my money's worth in private. (but it's a 3T and cheaper)
@ Anonymous How much cheaper?? Any chance you'd say the name of the school or at least the location? (signed, parent of a 5th grader in D3 who is worried as hell about middle school).

@anonymous This. Private schools and public schools are very different beasts.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say we're going to make it to winter break, at least.
And even if I'm wrong and they close at some point, they will likely reopen. Aren't the schools in the hot spot zones reopening this week?

I often feel that some private school parents want publics to close. They need to feel they're getting their money's worth.
