In response to kids eating unhealthy stuff while being stuck at home, I thought it may help everyone if we listed out healthy snacks to have on hand. It may decrease the impulse to always reach for that cookie/brownie.
My sons like babybell cheese, wheat thins, apples w peanut Butter, bananas, cashews, rice cakes. We are working slowly to get rid of things like crackers, chips, cheez it’s, ice cream etc
We started pickling as a hobby recently, and my kids like eating their own pickles. Apple slices sprinkled with cinnamon are also popular in my household.
One large mason jar or a tupperware container with a tight seal
5pickling cucumbers (also called kirby cucumbers) -or however many you can fit into your jar
1/2teaspooncoriander seeds
1/2 teaspoonmustard seeds
1/2 teaspoonblack peppercorns
a few pieces of fresh dill
3 bay leaves
6 clovesgarlic
1/4 cupsea salt
6 cupswater
If you are missing an ingredient or two, that is fine. The recipe is easily adaptable. You can also substitute all the spices with a pickling spice blend.
Just put the cucumbers and all the other ingredients in the mason jar, fill to the top, and refrigerate for 5-7 days.
We help them to differentiate between a treat and a snack, between hunger vs thirst and to understand portion control. I can’t wait until the holidays are over to get rid of all the junk food. If I could change one thing in our home post 2020 it would be to add a snack machine!!
Mine likes full fat greek yogurt with berries (I zap frozen ones since it's winter now). Or cheese and apple. or leftovers from dinner the night before.

My DS likes cucumbers, mandarin oranges and grapes. Also hummus/crackers. Smoothie made with plain yogurt and mango/berries. Nuts.
