Hi. My kids went to HVC for five summers. It's a wonderful camp. Low key, great programs...doesn't lean heavily on either sports or arts. Has a great balance of both. They have the option of two-weeks for first time campers. Otherwise, it's four or eight weeks. The owners are terrific and have developed a program where kids feel safe. There are no 'parent visiting' days which I think is the best of all. Let me know if you have any specific questions I may be able to answer.
Thank you -- this is so helpful. Do you by any chance know anything about how they are with food allergies and/or how it would be for an older (age 13) girl to attend for the first time (i.e., have most kids who attend been going there since they were 8?)? Thank you for your help!
One of my daughters has food allergies (tree nuts) and they take it very seriously. I sent her up with an Epipen and Benadryl which was kept by the nurse and taken on any day trips they went on. Thank god, there was never an accidental ingestion.
My kids started at 8 years old. I know that during their last year of camp (when they were 13) there were one or two new girls in the cabin. I think the counselors do a good job of integrating everyone. Because I can't speak from first hand experience, however, I would ask Meg & Peter (the owners) if they could put you in touch with a family whose child started at an older age. I'm sure they'd be happy to help you.
