I have 2 kids who went to 2 different middle schools. My oldest took Spanish all 3 years and did very well on the 8th grade proficiency test. We are not Spanish speakers btw. My current 8th grader's middle school only started Spanish this year and it's an absolute joke. Not sure why they are even bothering.
Both kids had language all 3 years , and one MS had choice of 3 languages. One school offered the Proficiency exam in 8th grade, which allows you to up 1 level in HS and the other did not. It was required class every year - not a fun elective. The quality/quantity of the learning really depended on the teacher.

And you're OK with this? Foreign language is standard curriculum in middle schools across the country.
