Divorced moms, and opinions of all are welcome. In your opinion, if the Dad is paying child support and the parents have joint custody but the child is primarily with the mom, should he the Dad also have access to the child's birth certificate, SS card and number, any and all school & health records, have the numbers of any savings bank accounts the child has etc. , any and all correspondence from the school & so on ? Or do you feel it is your right , as the Mom and primary custodial parent to parse it out to him ( the Dad) as you wish ? Asking for my sister in a situation and she is trying to find out what others do. TIA

Oh - the child in question is 16
I think the father has equal rights.
What exactly would the purpose of concealing these things be? Sounds like nothing but a power play
OP. Yes this is the exact situation.
Then tell your sister to cut the shit
yes the father is entitled to know, they share support.
I think the law isn't quite clear cut on this even if they have joint legal custody (but not joint physical custody). Is there a reason why your sister wouldn't want him to have access to all these things? What does she expect to gain from withholding information? If there isn't any solid reason then this just seems like picking the wrong battle.
I'm assuming the issue has to do with medical/ed info (therapy, birth control, etc) and the OP is throwing in Birth certificate and SS. card to throw us off.
HI , I'm the OP. medical records pertaining to the child ( not the mother) ...ie : for example if the child had a physical , Dad wants to have a copy of the report. For what its work iits a male child. Not a girl, so he's not trying to find out about birth control.
There are laws about this. Father has right to receive all medical and school records but mother doesn't have to be his personal assistant. And if he wants something, he can obtain it directly from the school/Dr's office (though mother should inform him of all treating physicians). Birth certificate and social security card should remain in the possession of the custodial parent but he should be given a copy (or loaned the document temporarily) if he needs it for something. Bank accounts in a minor's name technically require an adult co owner who is the real owner of the account and there is no need for the parties to disclose with one another how much money they have in their respective accounts that are for the child.
But why would a parent be so invested in whether the almost-adult child had a physical? Sounds like there is a power play involved, and maybe not such a great relationship with the child as well. FWIW, not even sure 16 yo kids even get yearly physicals anymore.
yes, teens get annual checkups.
Documention and ID, sure. But only financial info on accounts if the other parent is a co-signer. School communications to the extent he’s interested.
