I mentioned to DH that a child at the playground was wearing $$ designer shoes. DH could not even understand the impulse for adults or children to pay that much for clothing. How would you justify/explain it to someone who is uber practical?
I tried to explain that to him as well. He said, but you'd know they were wealthy if you knew the job they had, or they could buy things that are worthwhile which would signal. I mean the most expensive thing we own besides an apartment probably cost $2k, so I agree with him. B
Are there any well-designed object she would pay a premium for? I wouldn't buy expensive designer shoes fro a kid, but I can look at some fashion and be impressed by the beauty and art of it. and I pay extra for certain things to get a design that is easier to use or more aesthetically pleasing.
Golden Geese are verrrrrry popular at my DC's school for about five years now; not sure I would call them high fashion...but it's definitely wealth-signaling like the questionable taste Moncler hats with furballs on them.

Ps It would be totally weird and uncomfortable if your husband DID understand. Imho.
Conspicuous consumption

I would explain to him that wealth and consumption are divorced. Those people want you to *think* they have wealth.
@Anonymous so then it is stupid.

Something expensive isnt necessarily "high fashion." Materialistic, flashy, gaudy maybe.
