Do you think a person's character is basically set as a young adult or do you think that they can change as they mature? In other words, if a person is a jerk at 18 or 19, do you think they're probably still a jerk at 30, 40 or 50?
depends? some people are jerks because they're immature, some it's their personality. And even the ones whose personality is jerk CAN change, but they have to put in some work for that to happen.
I think that people are born with certain characteristics/ ways of reacting that are hard to change. Perhaps you can make a timid person take a little risk or make an impulsive person think a little before doing something. That said, I think people do mature as they get older. In particular, some people become more serious about school and become less "wild."
I think people can change, but it takes a. motivation (some crisis or else to enlighten them) and b. a lot of hard work. So it's unlikely that someone will end up being a completely different person. Maybe they will work on one thing or two.
Yes, I still cringe at some of the things I said/did in college. Now at 40+, I think I've matured. And I hope there is still more growth in my future (although now I have to be more intentional about that).
Very much depends on the individual. Changing requires encountering something that requires change, capacity to recognize problems in your behavior/personality, self-reflection to examine how these issues are holding you back or affecting your relationships, and self-control to change the behavior. Each person has these in differing levels. And some people just come out well-adjusted with good upbringing and never encounter huge problems that require a major personality or behavior change in order to surmount. I know some people who haven’t changed at all since 13 years old, and others who have become brand new people in adulthood.
