Encyclopedia brown mysteries, A to Z mysteries? Harry Potter? Percy Jackson series (greek myths retold), Eragon series? the I Survived series (historical fiction)?
Strongly second "How to Train Your Dragon," my DS loves that series, even though he is older now he still loves it. We read some of it together, personally I think it's much better than Percy Jackson, and better than the later HP books, which were a slog. The characters are charming, the way the story lines ultimately converge is impressive, and they are much more complex than the movies, and also very different in some significant ways.
The Track series by Jason Reynolds, A Whole New Ballgame by Phil Bildner, The Last Last Day of Summer by Lamar Giles, Things Not Seen by Andrew Clements, the Crossover by Kwame Alexander, Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky by Kwame Mbalia; Harbor Me by Jacqueline Woodson; Show Me a Sign by Anne Clare LaZotte, Wink by Rob Harrell

Any Stuart Gibbs books. And Adam Gidwitz. The Inquisitor's Tale is awesome.
Ender's Game, and the whole series (it splits into two branches). Just ignore the author...he's a jackass.
