So what would you do if at your company, if you reach 100% of your bonus goals, you get 100%, if you reach less, you get a proportionate amount, but if you do 3,4 or 5 times the amount of work, you still get 110% of your bonus at most? Why would anyone even bother in such a job?

Well are the chances for promotion greater for people who do 3-5 times the amount of work? If it's really the case that it's all the same, including in terms of future opportunities, preserving your position in the event of layoffs, and getting good experience, then you are right that it does not ever make sense to be doing 3-5 times the amount of work.
There is no chance for promotion in this department. Not for anyone. There are defined roles, its a journeyman type of job. I Guess lay-off protection is one benefit, but even that’s not guaranteed.
@Anonymous Yes, and layoff protection is not enough reason to do 3-5 times the work of other people if the compensation cap is 110%. There would need to be real promotion and experience upside for a person for a person to work that much harder. In such a job (and there are plenty of jobs like this), I would only be doing 110% at the most. Do you see people doing 3-5 times the work of others? It's not rational.
Doesn’t seem worth it at all. It’s quite a communist system there - no matter how much you contribute, you won’t get ahead and are being paid the same year in year out.
IME (personal experience in big law and friends in banks and consulting firms as well as other law firms), jobs that offer these kinds of significant performance based bonuses set expectations so high that it would really be near impossible to exceed expectations by more than 10%. And if you are, you need to wean off the cocaine and try to have a life.
Lol, so true !
Never take a job with bonus figures into the salary, get the money up front or walk.
So—-WHY do all this work? Why not chill out and do the work that will ge5 you max bonus, and go home? This sounds like a bit of a workaholism issue on your part.
Well, I only found out now that this is a communist company. I certainly won’t keep doing the work at the same level.
You do only so much work that gets you to the 110% :) dial back!
