I don’t have a house by the beach but I have a small condo in a nice city in Europe and we go every summer and sometimes over Xmas. The kids don’t have a choice but they like it a lot. They miss it now and are asking me when we can finally go back. It helps that their beloved granny lives there too.
Not a beach house , will have a country house. Biggest concern is kids will want to stay in the City on weekends to see friends and not leave to go to the house. Something to consider.
You have to find a way to make the location really cool and desirable for them. In my case, what I did to make them like the city in EU, I bought them gelato and popsicles that don’t exist here in this way, bought them cool clothes there and generally did fun activities that they wouldn’t get to do here. As they’re older, I tried to find friends so they could have their own relationships there. It was a creative effort but it paid off. They associate this place with awesome food and treats, cool clothes and activities and nice people. It was very important to me that they would like it, though.
haha, sure! join us! Another benefit of Europe is that when they’re 18 they can go to clubs. I did the same thing and it didn’t kill me. So - lots of great options ahead!
For better or for worse, kids these days seem far less concerned with being in close proximity to their friends than I remember being when I was young. They can connect with their friends virtually from anywhere. It gives me pause because I worry they will be antisocial but at the same time it gives us parents more opportunity to control their physical environment.
Our beach house is right on the ocean but no we don’t go every day. Sometimes the kids prefer the pool or they want to play tennis or do something else.
