What is a "spike"? All that happened is that the percent of those testing positive rose. I'm not arguing that "testing goes up, positives go up", but really, the "testing positive" metric is of limited utility to begin with. What is the denominator? How many people are opting to test on a day to day basis? What percentage of those testing think they might have had exposure or have symptoms?
@Anonymous it would help if people were clearer about which numbers they are talking about. Percent positivity and raw case numbers both have value but when people are talking about different things there are some pretty unfortunate misunderstandings.
This is a troll post... high holidays aren't even over yet (and if you were really Jewish you would know this) and also there is no spike and also even if there was a spike it could not have been caused by gatherings that happened as little as four days ago.
@anonymous that definitely tracks with my religious practice (Reform), but in the Hasidic communities the whole month of Elul has more gatherings for prayer etc.
Whether or not someone davens and whether or not they do it in a large group or a basement shtiebl is a decision affected by, among other things, the holiday cycle.
Numbers have been going up since before the HHD. It sure doesn't help though.
@anonymous I agree: colleges, schools, vacations were all factors.
The High Holidays just happened, it's not really enough days for people to have gotten sick because of contact over HH, test, and have results.
THIS.
I think it's Labor Day parties.
ITA. Tests alone take 3-7 days. It must be Labor Day spike.

A "spike" is a word in a news headline that gets clicks.
@anonymous Someone was on here saying NJ had a spike. Went to look at the numbers and they were flat. I don't understand this disregard for data.

@anonymous but the Hasidic communities gather every day, three times a day, for prayer. This isn't about the HHD.
@Anonymous it's not monolithic.

Did you see De Blasio's press conference today? Get back to me when you do.
