We don't have storage space, so I never had to consider this question, but... are you at exceptionally high risk or is anything specific involved? I mean I wouldn't even stop to think about it.
Yes, of course, it's a warehouse, and drafty, less risk than a grocery store in some ways. I know some people are uber cautious, but that would not worry me.
Actually, it's not a warehouse -- it's in the apartment building, and not part of the same ventilation system (it's never the same temp as the rest of the building). So it's like going to an interior room without windows in the building. Make a difference?
@Anonymous NP. I go to the basement storage in my apartment building reasonably often, and have not gotten Covid yet. So it seems that yes, it can be done safely.
@anonymous Eh. You can name call all you want, but the reality is that we are all still learning about this. People (including me) said wearing double masks was insanity a year ago. And look where we are now. So no, I'm neither extreme nor insane, just thinking about a new situation.
TBH while yes we are still learning some things we are mostly not still learning things like this. this question does suggest that you are limiting yourself in ways that are not based in science. Covid is spread by maskless (or potentially masked but less so) people congregating in indoor spaces. We cannot extrapolate the level of risk from the term 'storage area', nor give you historical details our our 'storage area' experiences. Yes of course many of us have been into other rooms in our building without catching covid. The factor you need to consider is are there crowds and/ or maskless humans there? If no then you should go and also go do other things where there are not crowds or maskless humans or you will go insane.
Good grief -- no one is going insane over these issues. We spend way too much time evaluating and dx'ing other people's mental health. Thank you, but not necessary. I'm all about science -- that's why I'm asking. The science says no indoor, maskless gathering, right? But that's exactly what can happen in an indoor, poorly ventilated storage area in a building where masks are not required in all areas by residents (or not observed by trips to storage areas). I imagine many city residential buildings with storage are the same. And we're all cleaning out spaces and potentially going in and out of these areas. So just wondering other people's experiences have been.
@Anonymous DP. I'm witn the OR. The key part here is the not the term "storage area." What you should ask yourself is are there a lot of people in that area? No one here can tell you this. As for my building storage area, it was rare for me to see another soul there when retrieving something. Not exactly a place where people hang out. Bt you seem to think differently -- that people are cleaning out space so it's crowded there? Just evaluate your risk tolerance for being in a crowded area with other people.
This post made me feel better. I thought I was going insane in risk calculation and anxiety, but see its normal for some people to feel anxious with covid.
OP here -- I'm sorry you feel anxious!! It's a tough time for sure. I actually don't feel all that anxious about getting COVID, but there are the off scenarios like this one where I'm not sure how to evaluate it given certain unknowns.
To assuage your fears, I have been to two storage locations at least 20 times, if not more, and didn't catch anything. They are really well ventilated and it's not like people congregate there. One of them was quite empty, the other one in NYC was busy on the weekend, but still we only saw 1 other person on our rather large floor.
Why would this be less safe than the grocery store?
Not sure if it's less ventilation, or if the closer quarters matter.
what?

@anonymous Thank you -- helpful to know!
Have you left your house since March?
?? Yes. What makes you think otherwise?
@Anonymous You sound really extreme, possibly insane. Wear a double mask and go.

I had no idea that not going to storage was a thing. I’ve probably a been like 15-20 times since March. i go as needed in our buildings basement
