I grew up in NYC, was here for the financial crisis in the 1970s, the blackout, 9/11, Sandy, all the recessions, didn't have any money growing up, now have some and could leave, never would. Will NY come back? Of course. People with no sense of history think this is the first epidemic/pandemic to hit NY, it's not, we came back before and will again.
I think that to many, it's more than just a crisis, but also a shift in how work is conducted. But even that has happened before. NYC as a shipping port. NYC as an industrial hub. etc etc.
Bloomberg had the foresight to at least TRY to make NYC a credible alternative to Silicon Valley, hence we have Silicon Alley and were ready to get the Amazon hub/HQ2, but our gov't fucked that up. So unless we change our governance, I don't know how we do reinvent ourselves.
Of course he’s right. This pandemic isn’t the first crisis to hit NYC and won’t be the last. The question is how many will, figuratively and literally, survive this one. I don’t know how many are serious about leaving the city but there will always, always be those who‘ll gladly take their places and build something new.
ITA. I think the many families will leave, but young people will still come here. And it may be more affordable for them. Didn't FB just sign a deal for office space in Manhattan? You can't replicate the creative spirit and energy, and people need to see each other. Sure, accounting can be done from anywhere but so many industries need in office time.
A lot of things are changing that will work against NYC. Who knows if the next generation will value the opportunities available versus the premium to live here
The obvious answer to that is that prices will come down. The only real problem with prices coming down is whether the City can still afford to provide the services it does.
If NYC wants to reinvent itself Di Blasio and people that think like him need to go. He has already managed to do great damage to the city. Look at the UWS. We need someone like Bloomberg or Giuliani to bring the city back to life!
I saw a comment on youbemom that "politicians like De Blasio are elected when a place is in the situation NYC was in a couple years ago: booming, prosperous, optimistic. People elect people like Giuliani when things are bad. I'm going to be interested to see who runs and is elected in the next election.
