A third of the country is vaccinated, they're in a month-long lockdown, and cases are STILL surging. WSJ article says 80% of infections are from the new British variant.
This is really bad news. There's no way we'll have a third of the US vaccinated even by the summer - at which point the new variant will be absolutely rampant.
Well many of us have been saying we will need to keep masking and social distancing into the summer. This isn't news to me.
The vaccine is still effective against the new variants.
Are deaths/hospitalizations still surging?
According to this, only 20% have received the second dose.
Cases have steadily been going down since mid-January. Deaths have been rapidly going down since January 25th.
Inoculation is strongly linked to case decline: https://www.bbc.com/news/health-55706855
Stop fear mongering.
The lack of progress in Israel is due almost entirely to the ultra-orthodox population, which is not complying with the lockdown, is keeping schools open against the law, and is refusing the vaccine. Non-compliance is the same reason we won't get it under control here for a long time.
@BrooklynMom . Exactly what I mean. It's scary - I'm sure we have just as many if not more non-compliant folks here in the good old US of A. I feel like we could be looking at an ever worse, deadlier surge this spring/summer, even as more people get the vaccine.
@anonymous Once all of those who want to be vaccinated are, there is going to be very little sympathy or closures to protect those who are not. The vaccine appears to work even against the new variants. For those who are vaccinated, things will get much better. For everyone else, I'm so sick of people not caring about one another - I wont shed any tears for them.
