Or are we just getting better at treating it? Gov Christhie has recovered from Covid after a week in the ICU. 6 months ago, it seems like the virus would have been a death knell for someone like him.
even at its worst the mortality rate was maybe five percent. Christie got extremely good (and expensive!) treatment that was not available in the spring and he got diagnosed and treated very early. so yeah, we're a lot better at treating it now and hospitals aren't overwhelmed. (was he really in the ICU? i hadn't heard that.)
I think you’re right that early treatment is key and seems to be the game changing issue. A good lesson that if you do get it, treat it early. Back in the spring, we were letting people ride it out alone until it reached crisis proportions.
@Anonymous I don't know the cocktails he and Trump received, but we do know that they started treatments prophylactically immediately within hours of getting a confirmed positive result. And they got that positive result very, very close to the time of exposure. It's seeming to me that early diagnosis and treatment is like Tamilflu -- you'll still be sick, but it shortens the recovery time and mitigates symptoms.
Not Christie specifically but I’ve read somewhere that if you got sick in the spring and ended up in the hospital your chances were maybe 20-30%, now those same people would have ~60-70% survival rate so yes, we are much better at treating it.
Haven't seen those numbers but part of the reason may be that now you have more access to hospitals. In the spring they told you to stay home till you couldn't. Still now, most people would not go to the hospital at first diagnosis because of the cost alone.
Most people SHOULD not go to the hospital at first diagnosis or FOR diagnosis. I don’t think people are flocking to hospitals for these things now. I think most understand by now what ERs and hospitals can and can’t do.
Also, the national trend is that most ERs are still only at 85% of typical census.
Yup, Christie was in ICU for a week and got antibodies and Remdesivir. So yes, the survival rate for the well-connected is much higher. He also has realized that he should have worn a mask :-I

@Anonymous What early treatments prove most effective?

I’m an MD and have not heard or seen such information....
