my instagram is full of people who have gone on vacation to europe, in some cases countries where it is surging, some photos with older relatives. Meanwhile I haven't seen my family (who will barely leave the house) in europe since december. Am I being overly risk averse? Are they being under cautious? Also can they stop posting their amazing looking vaca photos on insta? Read the room people.
The ills of social media are a totally different issue. I would just stop being on instagram or follow something different. Just like you choose what you put in your mouth, you need to choose what you consume digitally.
I thought most countries‘ borders are closed to americans. My mil is a Swiss citizen and would still have to quarantine for 14 days in switzerland. She is only allowed in because she is a citizen.
still quite a few places you can go
yes still quite a few countries - but it's not really advised that we all travel to them esp where it's surging bc people could bring it back.
I have a friend who‘s insta at the beginning of the pandemic was full of ’stay at home/ wear your damn mask/ what’s wrong with people (not SDing)’ posts. She’s been travelling Europe (EU passport) for the past two weeks, is on her third/fourth country and some of them have seen # rising. I wouldn’t describe myself as risk-averse but the change in her attitude seems mind-boggling.
yes one of the friends i have that's posting made me feel like a total ahole for leaving NYC mid march for our house upstate (which I have never put on instagram) and now is on some kind of europe tour literally seemingly to places where it's surging.
Maybe she already had the virus and assumes she's immune?
I don't think so
I think the consensus is that if you do not have a pre-existing condition like diabetes, heart disease, pulmonary issues, or an extreme inflammatory response, then if you are under 60 or so, Covid is not so risky. That is why people are acting this way, for better or for worse.
In my circle there's an enormous range. From people who don't seem all that concerned, to those who are still quarantining. There's no consensus, which is part of what makes it so hard.
and i have 2 friends who got it just this week and the only place they've been is the grocery store, which doesn't help me feel more relaxed.
Just posted below... DH got it at the grocery store too. It was like a chest cold, NBD.
Are you in NYC? There are something like 200 positive tests a day in NYC right now. Two of these were your friends, out of the 9 million people who live here?
We’ve been going on vacations and having others visit from other cities and countries.
Our family got it after my DH went to the grocery store in April. So at this point I give zero shits and have become less germaphobic overall because I see now that my anxiety won’t protect me. May as well stay healthy and live your life.
You should give a talk to the UFT
@Anonymous Oh come on, if OR's family had it and is now immune then this isn't about "live your life" and take chances because there is basically no risk in what OR is doing. That's very different from teachers who are older, have health issues or family members who do, and have not had COVID-19 and thus are not immune.
Nah, the UFT can’t be helped.
