Honestly, I'm so surprised schools are open and Cuomo hasn't shut things down. IMO, it's the right move, but I never would have anticipated it. I am disappointed though that testing is not more widely available. I really thought that by this time we'd have weekly home test kits, so that was naïve!

Disappointed that every teacher has not received vaccine yet. I think teachers should be required to get it or not be allowed to use Covid as an excuse to not go back into school. I think this should happen by March.
Agree 100% re. teachers. You don't want to take the risk of in-person teaching, fine. You don't want to take the life-saving measure that allows for safe in-person teaching, you're fired.
That said, it's clear from the posts on this site that a lot of parents are still going to opt to keep their kids home until god knows when.
Agree. Flu vaccines is mandatory this should be also. If they don't want it they shouldn't be working. 1 whole year remote is ridiculous. I know so many parents really struggling with teaching at home and working. Ma y have quit their jobs. The kids are behind. It's awful
Disagree. My elderly parents upstate have not been able to get a vaccine appointment, and they are told there won’t be more shots available till April. Elderly need to come first.
I'm shocked and thrilled schools are still open, even just hybrid. I thought they would stay closed after Thanksgiving and sort of planned for that mentally.
When this all started I was expecting to be able to travel within the country by Spring Break but I can see that won't be the case. Totally recalibrating our family travel plans in order to fit in the most important trips before our oldest leaves for college--4 years!
It' going about how I expected. Lots said the fall wave would be worse than the spring but I felt strongly it wouldn't just b/c we are more prepared for it. Im somewhat surprised everything in NYC hasn't been shut down more as a political stunt but from what I see, most things are pretty empty so not sure how necessary that really is. People who really want to go out and get this virus, can't be stopped so why try to save them. Most people are staying home. I also fully expected the trump admin to screw up the vaccine rollout and they have done just that. Hoping Biden can turn it around.
So you consider the current wave less bad than the spring? Case count wise we are above the spring, but that could be because we were undercounting then. Deaths are way way way down, though.
@Anonymous Yes I do. Aside from deaths being way down (which is a pretty critically important metric), we all know how to keep ourselves safe now. If someone wants to throw a party, I can't stop them but I don't see that at all the same as people who were just going about their lives as normal last year and were dropping like flies.
@Anonymous And the "twindemic" fears (out of control flu + Covid together) never came to pass. There's essentially no flu at all this year.
It's entirely possible that all these articles about the virus mutations are mostly media-created anxiety as well.
What we DO know is real is that children and parents (especially mothers) are suffering terribly with schools staying closed, and that MUST be addressed.
I did think testing would be much easier/better than it is, but I think NYC is doing a decent job stemming the 2nd wave. I figured we would be dealing with this for a long time under Trump so not really surprised about that. Vaccines happened quicker than I expected at least. I am genuinely surprised at how terribly CA has handled this (my and DH's whole families are there and we're both from there). I think we will be dealing with new strains and economic fall out for the next 3 years or so, and longer term impacts for 20 years. Our life as we knew it before is forever changed. If we don't hold China accountable this will happen again and worse--maybe even deliberately next time as this has been a boon for their economy.
I honestly thought the vaccine rollout would go better than it has. We had all the time in the world to prepare and yet it still seems that NY gov (and to be fair, most state govs) act like they were caught by surprise and seemingly making things up on the fly. It enraged me that we seemed to dither around with the first group (healthcare workers and nursing homes) for so long with every tracker showing 2/3 of vaccine distributed not used yet. Now it's getting better but it still feels like it doesn't feel as urgent as it should. IT'S NOT LIKE WE'RE ALL DYING TO GET OUT OF THIS PANDEMIC!
could not agree more!! I have been happy in NYC's response (mostly, except when Deblasio randomly closed schools at 3%) up until now but this is a huge disappointment and there is no excuse as to why there wasn't a better system in place.
I'm really disappointed in the vaccine roll out. The feds screwed it up but I feel DeBlasio and Cuomo could have done a netter job also. It's like opening up NYC public schools, officials had months to plan and strategize but did nothing until the last minute. I also feel like my middle and high schooler are never going back to school in person.
Just commented above before I saw this and could not agree more!
So veerry disappointed with the vaccine rollout. The jump from75 to 65 to eligible happened so quickly they didn't have time to vaccinated the older people. My parents are elderly but living st home and can't get appointments until almost march. There has been no guidance from there pcp (, they're upstate) it's awful. They are so high risk and have been left to fend for themselves. Luckily we can help some, but many people arent as lucky or don't have a pc or don't speak English etc etc. Who is going to help them?!
Agree. Getting a vaccine shouldn't be a Hunger Games experience.
Schools are not open in NYC. Elementary schools are partially open, MS and HS are not open since Nov 19th. Yes I am bitter.
Until I read the responses, I thought you meant with life in general. Yes and no.
haha, that too. maybe start a new thread on that.
I don't know what to think anymore so "how I thought it would go" is irrelevant!
